HRMA of Northwest Missouri Presents:
Engaging with the Military Person: Military Friendly vs Military Familiar
Program Description:
HR professionals are often the first exposure to a non-military work environment for transitioning military as a new occupation is a priority upon separation from service. When you meet someone with a military background, are you able to create rapport? Do you understand their value and potential to your organization? Are you able to understand some of the military-ingrained language or behaviors they have yet to break a habit in? Or is your engagement with a military person a bit awkward and possibly uncomfortable for lack of smooth communication?
Military friendly is not the same as military familiar. Being patriotic and wanting to support their transition is friendly. But to a military person, understanding a bit about who they are and where they are coming from is being familiar and translates more sincerely as military-friendliness.
Engaging well with the military person to achieve consistent, positive, and measurable outcomes requires understanding some basics about the environment and the people. An intent for military-friendly is not enough as education and tools are needed to envision, implement, and sustain a program.
If your company has a strategic military-friendly corporate message, are your HR practitioners at the tactical level equipped to deliver a military-friendly experience to recruits, candidates, new hires, or current employees? Do they know how to engage well or do they merely engage?
